Gilly de Barros and his "COLLAPSOTOPIA" at the CAN BONI Gallery
CAN BONI opens a new post-quarantine season with an amazing exhibition of works dedicated to the main symbol of Mallorca - the windmills
On Friday 10th July at 19.00 the gallery "CAN BONI" (c/ Forn de la Gloria, 8 / c/ de Can Boneo, 2A), after a forced pause in connection with the world pandemic COVID-19, will again open its doors to all lovers of fine arts, with keeping the safety and all health standards. This evening there will be a very significant presentation for Mallorca - an exhibition of works by the famous artist Gilly de Barros "COLLAPSOTOPIA", dedicated to the main symbol of Mallorca - windmills!
Gilly de Barros was born in Brazil, studied art and for many years created in New York, London and Barcelona, collaborating with famous artists, designers, sculptors, among them Miquel Barcelo, Stephan Roman, Javier Mariscal, Barry Flanagan, Bruno Fonseca and others.
A few years ago the artist returned to Mallorca and immediately found the source of his inspiration - windmills! The main symbol of the island with its deep history and ... unfortunately somewhat forgotten, and sometimes abandoned. He saw many expressive silhouettes spread all over the landscape. Inkjet black forms. Some reach out to help others in deep personal embrace. Some are angry while others are sad. Some are courageous and others defeated, but everyone has a story to tell.
For the series of works "COLLAPSOTOPIA" artist Gilly de Barros selected a dozen and a half original works of different formats, made both by oil on canvas and original mixed technique - gold leaf, Indian ink, coffee with natural pigments. These paintings are stunning!
“COLLAPSOTOPIA is what should be a collection of studies based on the expression of twisted windmills, which in itself is a metaphor for time," says Gilly de Barros. “In art I chose forms in motion to liven up the drawing. It is a concept of an artistic movement that originated in Italy in the early 20th century. It insisted that the perceived world is in a constant movement, as in COLLAPSOPIA, where the end coincides with the beginning. This is the reason why I prefer to show my paintings by several works together, sometimes even in series, to highlight this movement," says the artist.
The raw approach and use of natural pigments is an artist's attempt to break through a hole in industrialism and nature to better harmonize them, as time itself does in its endless creativity. Gilly de Barros will modestly try to imitate time in his pictorial analysis of the COLLAPSOTOPIA series.
“Looking past the obvious, close observation and involvement of the subject is my process," says Gilly de Barros. The challenge is to see not only the distraction from the obvious, but also to capture its unique itself. My aim is to inspire those who see my work, to look more closely at the world around us, to discover beauty in unusual places. I will be glad to see you all at my solo show in the CAN BONI Gallery on July 10th at 19.00 to share my vision of Mallorca and these beautiful, so different and fascinating windmills. See you soon!”
The "COLLAPSOTOPIA" exhibition at the CAN BONI Gallery will take place from July 10 to 23, 2020. The entrance is free.
